The 2020 Annual Conference and Language Service Solutions Seminar of the Localization Service Committee of Translators Association of China (TACLSC) was held in Beijing recently (14 November 2020). The conference released the "Research report on the response to Covid-19 of the Member Units of TACLSC".

The survey showed that the impact of Covid-19 is considered to be profound, complex and long-term, and the members actively developed operation processes using innovation and technology. Most of the member had already established channels and capabilities to communicate and acquire overseas customers effectively. International companies are focusing on the Chinese market, and their positioning is changing from using China as a production center to a business center. At the same time, the epidemic has accelerated the pace of teaching reform in universities and new teaching models have become more popular. The upgrading and innovation of school-enterprise cooperation models is now an important topic.

In the first seminar, EC Innovation and Pactera, representatives of Chinese language service companies, discussed the "Challenges and opportunities for Chinese language service companies entering the international market" and "How Chinese language service companies can better serve the Chinese market and Chinese enterprises", introducing the beneficial experience of enterprises participating in international market competition and the specific practice of how to construct the entire ecological chain of language services.

In the discussion session, RWS shared its own experience on providing a one-stop solution service for a vertical and proposed the service strategy of being focus on advantageous areas and providing "end-to-end solutions". The theme of the second seminar was "Talent training and technology improvement under normal epidemic prevention and control" and the Beijing Language and Culture University shared the progress of "BiCovid.org new coronary pneumonia epidemic bilingual data sharing platform project" and introduced translation technology in Application cases in emergency language services.

CloudTranslation, a representative of Chinese translation technology company, shared some thoughts on the "Challenges and practice of machine translation", and combined practical cases to demonstrate the efficiency of machine translation in vertical fields and the experience of post-translation translation. In the discussion session, RWS used its own successful cooperation with domestic universities as an example, emphasizing the key role of scene-based training and practice in the talent training process. RWS also introduced its latest exploration of "School-Enterprise 163 Program" in the post-epidemic era, which will lead to universities and language companies partnering to cultivate industry talents for upstream and downstream companies for specific vertical, such as IP, life sciences and technology.

Wang Gangyi (Executive Vice President and Secretary General of TAC), the leaders of TACLSC and some senior executives from member units of the Association visited RWS’s Beijing office after the conference. During the visit, RWS shared with them how it has become the world's leading language company through its continuous effort in key advantage areas and also through several large-scale mergers and acquisitions. The visitors commended RWS on its offices, its efforts in the language service industry over the past few years, and congratulated RWS for its outstanding achievements in the language service industry.
