Acoustic submarine program updates IETMs

Acoustic submarine program for US Navy cuts overall program costs by 60%.

The US Navy’s acoustic submarine program required updates for its interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs). The legacy SGML data format they were using was inefficient and didn’t allow information to be shared easily between all subcontractors.

The program needed to migrate to S1000D and create a centralized repository to allow collaboration. After an industry study on S1000D tool sets, the program identified LiveContent and Contenta as the main applications to update and improve the existing system.

US Navy’s acoustic submarine program increased system throughput by 50% and reduced MTTR with Contenta solutions

Challenges

  • Obtain a system to manage the development of more than 8,000 data modules (DMs)
  • Migrate to the S1000D standard
  • Improve reuse of content and simplify the configuration of current data
  • Increase usability and flexibility of DM structure
  • Streamline production processes
  • Improve IETM navigation for the maintainers

Results

  • Shorter mean time to repair (MTTR) achieved by:
    • Improving reuse and reconfiguration of current data
    • Increasing system throughput by 50%
    • Increasing navigational efficiency
  • Overall program costs cut by 60%
  • Funds freed up for creation of videos embedded as real-time training aids inside the IETM
