In preparation for possibly hosting the Boston Olympics in 2024, the maker of the city’s Sam Adams beer has filed two trademark applications. The Beer Company applied to the USPTO for a trademark on « Boston 2024 », which would be limited to beer, Jessica Paar, a spokeswoman for the brewery, said on Wednesday. Although polls show residents of Boston oppose the idea of possibly hosting the games in 2024, the maker of the city’s Sam Adams beer has its sight set on the trademark.
« We were introduced recently to members of the Boston 2024 Committee and had a very preliminary conversation about collaborating on a special beer in the future, » stated Paar. « There’s nothing set in stone. It’s just a fun idea we talked about. »
This fun idea might hit a road block in the future, as recent polls show more Boston residents oppose the idea of hosting the Summer Games than are in favor of it. Opponents are concerned about the spiraling costs for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, in which Russia reportedly spent more than $50 billion. Without the majority support of residents, Boston will probably not challenge rivals including Rome, Paris and Hamburg.
