This year the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) International Convention was held in Boston, MA for its 25th year. The BIO represents more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic institutions and organizations both in the US and in more than 30 nations. BIO members lead the research and development of innovation in healthcare, agriculture and biotechnology products. The BIO conference also made history by receiving a Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Business Partnering Event’. There were 18,289 attendees from around the world that attended the 4-day conference and 46,916 partnering meetings – Diana Ross even performed!
RWS IP Services attended BIO and met with some of our clients and agents involved in the cutting-edge world of biotechnology. Whilst at the event, we attended several fireside chats and educational sessions led by industry professionals and clients. A particular highlight was seeing BIO President & CEO, Jim Greenwood discuss industry trends including gene editing, gene therapy and how the industry will overcome environmental challenges such as drought to provide food worldwide. Greenwood also awarded the 2018 BIO History-Maker Award to Ashanthi De Silva, the first person in the world to receive gene therapy 25 years ago.
The exhibition floor was arranged into countries and US states with each booth showcasing the research and technology to come out of universities and businesses worldwide. All exhibitors displayed accessible solutions to real problems, be it lab efficiency or genetic testing to identify future health issues. There was a large networking event across the floor where booths shared food, drink and giveaways to represent their heritage. From a delicious traditional buffet at the Taiwanese stand to maple syrup cotton candy at the Canadian stand, the conference was a celebration of technology worldwide.
RWS IP Services was delighted to attend the world’s largest business partnering event and learn more about the fascinating biotechnology industry. See you in Philadelphia for BIO 2019!
