Friday Foreign Filing Roundup

The first traces of spring were felt this week in NYC.  Let’s hope more warm weather is to follow shortly! Please read on for your weekly foreign filing update:

  • The European Patent Organization (EPO) put together a list of highlights from 2013, including their 40th anniversary and progress on the unitary patent. 
  • WIPO had a record year in 2013, as the PCT experienced a growth rate of over 5% and for the first time more than 200,000 patent applications were filed in one year. 
  • According to the annual World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) report, China replaced Germany as the third largest country in patent filings.
  • Patent filings at the EPO grew in 2013 to over 2.8% over the previous year. As EPO President Benoit Battistelli states, “Demand for patent prosectuion in Europe is up for the fourth consecutive year.”
