Moravia has a strong reputation for delivering excellent linguistic quality through stringent quality processes, so the next entry in our “People in Production” series provides a little more insight into the individual people who drive this quality. I interviewed Marta Kapinusova, a Linguistic Services Group Manager, to understand what her work is like, what her background is, and what she likes about our industry.
Me: Marta, tell us a little about you: where do you live, what is your life like?
Marta: I was born in a village of about 80 houses called Zvěrkovice. I used to live that typical quiet and sort of easy life. I had to commute to attend school; there were no shops and only one main road. I have been living in Brno for 13 years now. I came here to get a temporary summer job working for the top Czech producer of electronic and printed dictionaries. I worked as a lexicographer, which is about writing and editing dictionaries.
I live in a small flat, ten minutes walking distance to get outside the city and enjoy the fresh air and nature. I enjoy trips to discover interesting places in our country, like old caves, rocks, lookout towers, old castles, ruins, museums. Recently, I discovered postcrossing, and it’s become a fun hobby to exchange postcards with strangers around the globe. Wherever I go, I search for postcards, unusual ones, beautiful ones.
Me: What did you study in college? Where did you go?
Marta: I went to Brno University to study Czech language and social sciences. It was a big mixture of history of everything, philosophy, ethics, political science, political geography, religions, Czech history, etc. I had intended to be a teacher. My graduate work was in sociology.
Me: Those are really interesting subjects. From there, how did you end up in the translation industry?
Marta: Coincidence! After I studied Czech language and managed a Czech group of lexicographers, I tried to find a job connected with linguistics, and this was it!
Me: A lot of us linguist/teacher types, like me, ended up in this industry by accident. Or luck, I like to believe. How many languages do you speak?
Marta: Czech, some Slovak after a week in Slovakia, English of course, Russian, which I am learning now, and some basic German.
Me: I feel so monolingual!! Tell me about your role at Moravia.
Marta: I am a Linguistic Services Group Manager. I am in charge of a group dedicated to providing linguistic support to Moravia teams for current accounts, like selecting and training resources, creating references, setting QA strategy, managing linguistic queries, arbitrating linguistic arguments, solving problems and quality issues, training reviewers, and even more than that! I also manage quality tests and pilots for new clients.
Me: Wow, that is no small job. What are your major work challenges, and what do you like best?
Marta: I love that we have people all around the world working together. One big challenge is the pace. Moravia is known for being creative and adaptable, so we are often asked to conduct a new pilot or test project that requires a new or unusual approach in a high-pressure, short-turnaround situation.
Also, there are lots of tools in our industry and it takes time to learn them all! I enjoy the new technologies. I work with a variety of customers, and there are always new questions and challenges that stretch me to grow professionally.
Me: Yes, I feel the same way! There is a lot to learn and remember. What advice do you have for someone who is just starting to work in localization?
Marta: I would tell that person to be open to all new things, be optimistic, trust the knowledge you have, make use of it, try to learn quickly, communicate and be organized. Also, think before you panic!
