U.S. & China Extend Lead in International Patent Filings

The United States extended its position as the top source of international patent applications via WIPO amid a strong year of worldwide IP filing growth. International patent applications filed under WIPO’s PCT grew by 1.7% to 218,000 in 2015, a new record.

Innovators based in the United States filed the largest annual number of international patent applications in the last 38 years (57,385 PCT filings). The U.S. was followed by Japan (44,235), and China (29,846). The overall increase in patent-filing activity by China based innovators accounted for much of the growth last year.

Telecom companies topped the list of PCT filers in 2015. Huawei Technologies led for the 2nd year with 3,898 PCTs. Qualcomm Incorporated was the second largest filer with 2,442 published applications and China’s ZTE Corporation rounded out the top 3 with 2,155 PCT applications.
