Good afternoon. We have compiled a list of highlights from WIPO’s PCT newsletter, a popular resource for IP professionals and patent applicants looking to stay updated on changes related to the PCT system. Please see a recap from July’s edition below:
New PCT Contracting State
On June 23, 2016, Djibouti acceded to the PCT, becoming the 150th Contract State to do so. On September 23 it will become bound by the PCT and any international application filed on or after 9/23 will include the designation of Djibouti. Furthermore, citizens of Djibouti will be entitled to file internationally under the PCT as of September 23, 2016.
World Trade Organization
Liberia and Afghanistan have become Members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), thus bringing the total numbers of Members to 164. Liberia is already part of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property and a member State of the PCT. Afghanistan is neither party to the Paris Convention nor a member State of the PCT.

PCT Patent Prosecution Highway Pilots
On July 1, 2016, a two way PCT-PPH pilot program began between the Australian Patent Office (IP Australia) and the EPO. Under this program, accelerated processing in the national phase in one country is available on the basis of a PCT application with a positive written opinion from either the ISA or the IPEA.
