WIPO Releases New PCT Video Series

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share new videos released by WIPO this week, which are taken from their latest YouTube series “Learn the PCT”. These short programs are packed with information on the Patent Cooperation Treaty, and will prove to be a great resource for applicants and inventors considering foreign filing via the PCT.

Check out the first two episodes below. In episode 1, Deputy Director of the PCT Legal Division, Matthias Reischle, introduces the main procedural steps within the PCT system, examining traditional patent systems, avenues available to applicants seeking international patent protection and more. Then in the second episode, Reischle discusses the actual PCT application, sharing important deadlines and country-specific requirements for applicants.

We are excited to share with you the next two installments of WIPO’s new YouTube series, “Learn the PCT”.  These short segments educate inventors and applicants on the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the steps one must take to gain patent protection in various countries.  To view the first two episodes, please check out our previous post here.

For your consideration, we have included the third and fourth episodes below.  In episode 3, Matthias Reischle, Deputy Director of the PCT Legal Division, discusses what elements must make up an application  in order for it to be considered.  Among many other things, this includes translations, claims, request forms, drawings, the summary of claimed invention, and more.  In episode 4, he talks about the benefits of declarations and describes how these may be used to anticipate national stage requirements.

Wouldn’t it be a perfect world if an inventor could file a single application to get global patent protection? Or maybe even on a lesser scale, say, an Asian patent or a North American patent. Does an international patent even exist, and if so, how do you apply for one?

Unfortunately, a global patent doesn’t exist, and it’s unlikely that a patent covering the entire world will come into being anytime soon. There has been much discussion on the creation of such a system, but daunting obstacles must first be overcome.
