The power behind the evidence. Inside RWS’s global IP research Crowd

In intellectual property, evidence shapes outcomes. The strength of that evidence often depends on the depth of investigation behind it. At RWS, that investigation is powered by a global IP research Crowd – a network of specialists who contribute technical expertise, multilingual capability and disciplined analysis to support litigation, invalidity, freedom-to-operate and strategic portfolio decisions worldwide.
We asked members of the Crowd to reflect on their work and motivations. Their responses revealed a community defined by experience, intellectual curiosity and a shared commitment to rigorous research.
A global network with deep technical roots
The Crowd brings together specialists from science, engineering, software, life sciences, manufacturing and many other fields. Many hold advanced technical degrees. Others have experience in patent law, regulatory frameworks or R&D environments. This range of backgrounds allows studies to be examined from multiple technical and jurisdictional perspectives.
Experience is a defining characteristic of the community. Fifty-nine percent of the researchers we surveyed had been part of the Crowd for more than five years, with the largest group contributing for six to ten years. Over time, that continuity builds familiarity with evolving terminology, recurring drafting strategies and the subtle distinctions that influence how prior art is interpreted.
Researchers frequently describe the work as intellectually demanding and varied. Projects span industries and technologies, requiring careful claim analysis and sustained concentration. Many speak about the satisfaction that comes from contributing to decisions where accuracy and depth directly influence strategic outcomes.
Achievements that shape cases
When researchers discussed memorable projects, they emphasized the complexity of the investigations involved.
Several described invalidity searches that required tracing technical ideas across unrelated industries before locating a decisive reference. Others recalled uncovering relevant material in older publications or navigating language differences that initially obscured functional similarity.
One researcher referred to the importance of performing “cross-domain searches to find the needle from the haystack”. The phrase captures the persistence and analytical depth that characterize this work.
Such studies require technical fluency, patience and a willingness to explore unconventional search paths. In litigation contexts, this depth of investigation can materially influence the strength of an argument. In freedom-to-operate assessments, it can identify risks that inform commercial planning. In licensing discussions, it contributes well-substantiated evidence that strengthens strategic positioning.
The impact of the work emerges through thorough analysis and careful interpretation.
Skills that strengthen interpretation
Effective IP research depends on structured methodology combined with disciplined reasoning.
Survey responses consistently highlighted critical thinking, attention to detail and knowledge of patent law as central to successful studies. Researchers examine claims with precision, consider inventive step and assess functional equivalence across technical descriptions that may vary in terminology.
Multilingual capability further expands the scope of investigation. Searching across jurisdictions and languages reduces the risk of overlooking relevant prior art and broadens the evidentiary base.
Advanced research platforms and AI-supported tools contribute efficiency and scalability. Human specialists remain responsible for evaluating relevance and contextual meaning, applying domain expertise to determine how findings should be interpreted within a strategic or legal framework.
A community driven by curiosity
Intellectual curiosity emerged repeatedly as a defining quality of the Crowd.
Researchers described the appeal of working across diverse technologies and engaging with unfamiliar subject matter. Many value the opportunity to follow technical ideas across time and industry, building connections that are not immediately visible.
Over years of practice, this curiosity develops into refined pattern recognition. Experienced researchers gain insight into where promising material may reside and how different drafting approaches signal strategic intent. Clients benefit from analysis shaped by both technical depth and accumulated experience.
Supporting decisions across the innovation lifecycle
The Crowd’s work contributes to decisions at every stage of the innovation journey.
In early-stage R&D, research can illuminate white space and reduce duplication risk. In freedom-to-operate studies, it informs planning prior to market entry. During licensing discussions, it provides structured evidence that supports negotiation. In litigation and invalidity scenarios, it can surface material that meaningfully influences outcomes.
Across each context, the objective remains consistent: deliver defensible insight grounded in comprehensive investigation and careful interpretation.
The collective expertise of the Crowd – diverse in background, global in reach and sustained through long-term engagement – strengthens the evidentiary foundation on which IP decisions are made.
Evidence sits at the center of every critical IP decision. Behind that evidence stands a global network of specialists whose skill, experience and intellectual discipline support stronger outcomes.
That is the power behind the evidence.
