Decoupled architecture
Description
A decoupled architecture separates the processes of content creation and content delivery. The back-end environment is where authors, editors and localization teams work to create and manage content. The front-end environment, meanwhile, is responsible for publishing that content to websites, portals or applications.
When content is ready, it’s transferred from the authoring environment to the live environment, usually via secure APIs or publishing queues. This separation enhances security, performance and stability. If the public-facing website experiences issues, authors can continue their work without interruption. Similarly, the site can stay live and functional even when maintenance is being carried out on the authoring environment. A decoupled setup also supports scalability and regional delivery – for example, enabling organizations to deploy localized versions of their websites across global regions, including those operating behind restricted firewalls. For enterprises managing multilingual or regulated content, decoupled architectures provide a secure, scalable foundation for headless CMS and hybrid CMS delivery models, such as those supported by Tridion.
Example use cases
- Enterprise websites: Maintain high availability while securely managing updates.
- Global delivery: Deploy regional publishing environments for different markets.
- Regulation: Protect sensitive or pre-release content from external access.
- Hybrid management: Combine decoupled and headless approaches for flexible delivery.
- Continuous publishing: Support 24/7 authoring and publishing without downtime.
