EPO

The EPO (European Patent Office) is the central authority responsible for examining and granting European patents under the European Patent Convention (EPC). It provides a unified application process that enables inventors and companies to seek patent protection across multiple European countries through a single filing.

Description

Headquartered in Munich, Germany, with offices in The Hague, Berlin and Vienna, the EPO simplifies access to patent protection within its 39 member states. Once a European patent is granted by the EPO, it must be validated in each selected country to take effect at the national level.

The EPO’s responsibilities include examining patent filings, publishing European patent filings, maintaining the European Patent Register and facilitating opposition or appeal procedures. Its unified system reduces duplication and cost compared with filing separate national applications in each jurisdiction. RWS works closely with the European Patent Office through its Intellectual Property Services team, providing patent translation, filing, EP Validation and recordals. Our expert linguists, patent attorneys and project managers ensure compliance with EPO formalities, linguistic precision and timely submission across all target countries.
