ICE match (In-context exact match)

In computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools such as Trados, translation memories store previously translated segments along with their context. When a new project is processed, the system compares incoming text against the TM. If a segment matches both in wording and in context – such as appearing in the same paragraph or sequence – it is classified as an ICE match.

Because ICE matches replicate both linguistic and structural context, they can usually be accepted without editing. This allows translators and reviewers to focus on new or fuzzy segments, increasing productivity and maintaining consistency across projects.
