Key (strings)

Each key acts as a reference point within a resource file (such as Android XML, Strings (.strings for iOS) or JSON). When the application runs, the software retrieves the translation linked to that key and displays it in the appropriate language.

Keys allow developers and linguists to manage text efficiently without modifying code. During localization, only the translatable strings are extracted – while the keys, which remain constant, maintain structure and prevent duplication. This ensures stability even when multiple languages or frequent updates are involved. In RWS localization workflows, keys and strings are handled within Trados and other CAT tools (Computer-assisted translation) environments, preserving context and functionality. Through close collaboration between linguists and engineers, RWS ensures translations are accurate, properly referenced and fully functional across all platforms.
