Glossary

OTA (Over-the-Air updates)

Over-the-Air (OTA) updates refer to the remote distribution and installation of software, firmware or content updates directly to connected devices via a wireless network. They allow manufacturers and service providers to deliver improvements, patches and new features without requiring physical intervention.

Description

OTA updates are widely used in sectors such as automotive, consumer electronics and mobile applications to keep products secure and up to date. They rely on continuous connectivity, enabling companies to respond quickly to issues, enhance user experience and extend the lifespan of devices.

In localization and global product management, OTA updates must account for multilingual content, ensuring that new interfaces, messages and system prompts are accurately translated and culturally appropriate before release. Poorly localized updates can lead to user confusion, compliance risks or inconsistent user experiences across regions. RWS supports clients delivering OTA updates by integrating localization workflows directly into product development pipelines. Through platforms such as Trados and Language Weaver, RWS ensures new content – from user interface strings to in-app notifications – is translated and deployed seamlessly in every target language.
