PCT

The PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) is an international treaty administered by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) that simplifies the process of seeking patent protection in multiple countries. It allows applicants to file a single international patent application that can later be pursued in over 150 member states.

Description

The PCT system provides a unified procedure for the initial filing and examination of patent applications across member countries. Instead of submitting separate national filings at the outset, applicants file one international application, which is then assessed for novelty and patentability during the international phase.

After this phase, applicants can enter the national phase entry in chosen countries to pursue local patent protection under national laws. The PCT process helps delay country-by-country filings and costs, allowing applicants more time to evaluate commercial potential and decide where protection is most valuable. RWS supports clients throughout the PCT lifecycle – from translation and filing to national phase entry and validation. With extensive linguistic and legal expertise, RWS ensures that patent applications meet both WIPO standards and local patent office requirements.
