Software accessibility

Software accessibility is the process of designing, developing and testing software applications so that people of all abilities can use them effectively. It ensures that interfaces, workflows and interactive elements are perceivable, operable and understandable – for everyone, including users who rely on assistive technologies.

Description

Accessible software is built on inclusive design principles. It supports navigation by keyboard, voice or screen reader, uses clear structure and feedback, and avoids color or motion dependencies that can block access.

Accessibility also extends to localization (L10n) and multilingual deployment. As software is adapted for new regions or markets, accessibility features – such as ARIA labels, alt text and dynamic text scaling – must remain intact across all language versions. Testing software accessibility involves automated scans, manual evaluation and real-world usability checks using assistive technologies. Compliance with global standards such as WCAG 2.2, EN 301 549 and Section 508 ensures applications are inclusive by design and meet regulatory requirements in every market. By embedding accessibility into development, testing and localization workflows, organizations can create digital products that are not only compliant but more intuitive, scalable and user-friendly.

Example use cases

  • Enterprise: Build accessible interfaces that meet WCAG and Section 508 standards.
  • Applications: Design inclusive navigation and input methods for mobile and desktop.
  • Localization: Maintain accessibility metadata and features across languages.
  • QA: Integrate accessibility checks into software testing cycles.
  • Public sector: Ensure government or citizen-facing applications meet legal mandates.
