Source file

A source file is the original version of a document, software file or digital asset used as the basis for translation or localization. It contains the text, code or structured content that will be extracted, translated and then reintegrated to create localized versions.

Description

In localization workflows, the source file is the foundation of every project. It may include text for software interfaces, marketing materials, websites or technical documentation. Common source file types include XML, JSON, HTML, InDesign, PO file format or RESX file format.

During file preparation, source content is extracted from these files into computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools such as Trados, where linguists can translate text without affecting code or formatting. Once translation is complete, the localized text is reinserted into the original file structure to produce ready-to-publish deliverables. At RWS, source file handling is managed by dedicated engineering teams using Trados, Language Weaver and automation tools to ensure every element – from strings to metadata – is correctly extracted, protected and reintegrated. This process preserves both functionality and linguistic integrity across all target languages.
