TM leverage (translation memory leverage)

TM leverage is a cornerstone of localization efficiency. It measures how much of a new project can be translated automatically using previously approved content stored in a translation memory (TM). When a file is analyzed, the system compares its text against the TM database to identify specific match types: 100% matches (exact repetition), Fuzzy matches (partial matches) and Context matches (exact matches in the same context).

High TM leverage is a key indicator of a mature localization process. It rewards consistent source writing and disciplined memory maintenance. In Trados and other CAT tools (Computer-assisted translation), leverage statistics are used to calculate Net rate pricing—directly reducing translation costs and turnaround times while ensuring consistency with past projects.
