WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines)

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are an internationally recognized set of standards that define how to make digital content accessible to people with disabilities. Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), WCAG provides testable success criteria to ensure that web, software and multimedia content is perceivable, operable, understandable and robust for all users.

Description

WCAG serves as the global benchmark for digital accessibility. It outlines how websites, software, documents and online services should be designed so that everyone – including people with visual, auditory, motor or cognitive disabilities – can use them effectively.

Each version of WCAG (currently 2.2, with 3.0 under development) defines specific success criteria across four core principles: Perceivable (users can perceive information); Operable (interfaces are navigable); Understandable (information is easy to comprehend); and Robust (content remains accessible as technologies evolve). WCAG forms the legal foundation for many global accessibility regulations – including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508 (US) and the European Accessibility Act (EAA). Meeting WCAG standards ensures compliance and enhances usability for all users. By aligning accessibility testing, design and localization workflows to WCAG, organizations can deliver inclusive digital experiences at scale while reducing risk and remediation effort.

Example use cases

  • Web: Build interfaces that meet WCAG 2.2 standards.
  • eLearning: Develop accessible digital training that meets global compliance benchmarks.
  • Document: Apply WCAG criteria to PDFs, videos and audio assets.
  • Testing: Evaluate and remediate content against WCAG success criteria.
  • Localization: Maintain accessibility compliance across translated and adapted content.
