Agile localization (incl. agile translation management)

Agile localization is an iterative approach to translation and content adaptation that runs in parallel with product or software development. Instead of treating translation as a final step, agile localization delivers updates in short cycles so global releases can keep pace with continuous development.

Description

Traditional localization follows a linear sequence – content is written, handed off and translated as a batch. Agile localization replaces this with smaller, frequent updates that match the rhythm of agile development sprints. Content is translated, reviewed and reintegrated as it is created.

This approach depends on strong tooling, automation and collaboration. Features such as connector-based file exchange, translation memory reuse, in-context review and real-time machine translation (MT) integration support faster, more reliable updates. Agile localization also requires close alignment between developers, product teams and localization specialists so issues are addressed early and consistently.

At RWS, agile localization is supported through Trados, Language Weaver and API-driven workflows that integrate directly into development pipelines. This combination of human expertise and intelligent automation helps teams reduce bottlenecks, release frequently and maintain quality across every sprint.

Example use cases

  • Continuous software updates and frequent release cycles
  • Integrated translation within agile development environments
  • Automated file hand-off through connectors and APIs
  • Cross-functional collaboration between engineering and localization teams

Key benefits

Faster time to market
Shorter turnaround cycles accelerate global availability.
Smoother global releases
Prevents the "localization bottleneck" at the end of development.
Reduced friction
Automated workflows minimize manual hand-offs and file transfers.
Higher quality
Issues are identified and fixed iteratively rather than at the end of the project.

RWS perspective

RWS supports agile localization through tools and workflows designed for speed, reusability and integration. Trados streamlines hand-offs and versioning, Language Weaver provides immediate MT output for rapid iteration and connectors automate movement between systems. This Human + Technology model helps global teams localize continuously while maintaining linguistic quality and functional accuracy across every sprint.
