String / translation string

A string, or translation string, is a segment of text extracted from software, a website or an app that can be translated or localized independently. Each string usually represents a discrete unit of user-facing content – such as a button label, menu item, alert message or instructional phrase – that appears within a digital interface.

Description

In software and web localization, content is rarely translated as continuous text. Instead, it is divided into strings stored in resource files that allow translators to work efficiently within a structured environment.

Each string includes not only the translatable text but also contextual metadata, such as variable placeholders, character limits or comments from developers. This ensures that translators understand how and where the string will appear in the GUI (Graphical User Interface). Accurate translation string handling is essential for functional testing and linguistic testing. Poorly localized strings can lead to layout issues, mistranslations or broken user experiences across platforms and languages.

Example use cases

  • Software: Translating UI elements like buttons, menus and notifications.
  • Web: Managing and translating web page content within CMS or code-based structures.
  • App: Preparing localized builds for multilingual release.
  • Testing: Verifying that translated strings display correctly in the final product.
