Beyond Translation: How to Conquer the Global Marketing Multiverse
This December, publishing experts from diverse industries such as financial services, automotive, government, aerospace and defence and the legal sector will gather at our XPP Online Summit to gain expert tips, training and insights to take advantage of the full power of our XML Professional Publisher (XPP). But how much do you know about the evolution of XPP?

The XPP story started way back in the 1980s. XPP was a game changer: it was the first application of separating content from formatting – meaning content could be formatted differently for different output streams. Until then, the formatting had to be embedded in the content, severely limiting reusability. Industry analysts were quick to recognize XPP’s revolutionary nature, saying it signalled a new generation in publishing technology. Companies, too, were keen to leverage this new technology – enterprises started purchasing XPP that same decade, creating many relationships that endure to this day.

Ahead of the summit, take this opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich history of our market-leading publishing system that has led to many current customers using XPP for 10, 20 and even 30 years – a rare phenomenon in the world of software.

1980s

  • The company Xyvision is formed.
  • Xyvision announce their high-performance computer publishing system – known at the time as ‘Xyvision Production Publisher’.
  • Gilson Graphics acquire their first version of XPP and become a long-standing customer.
  • Xyvision introduce a new family of networked architecture – the 55/65 family. The new systems’ ability to be networked together and their small footprint are a far cry from the initial 85/95 model, which used 300-megabyte disk drive platters that were the size of washing machines.
  • XPP introduces multi-language publishing capabilities.

1990s

  • Xyvision make a major push into the aerospace and defence market, signing their first enterprise sales, with Northrup Grumman and Sikorsky – both still customers today.
  • The XyUser group – an independent group of Xyvision product users, primarily focused on XPP – is formed. Many of its members have remained active in the industry ever since, and are attending the December summit.
  • Xyvision become a much more flexible, software-only-based solution, eliminating dependencies on proprietary hardware, operating systems and networks.
  • Gulfstream submit their new corporate jet, the Gulfstream 5, to the Federal Aviation Administration for certification with over 11,000 pages of documentation, all published using our technology. This makes the Gulfstream 5 the first aircraft to be certified through a digital submission of information – a submission enabled by XPP. Gulfstream remain a customer to this day.
  • Xyvision are the first to the financial market with XyEDGAR – XPP’s program for producing the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system filings required by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

2000-present

  • The US Navy Enterprise Subscription Licence Agreement is signed to help support the US Navy’s rationalization, reduction and centralization strategy for technical publications. All of the Navy’s maintenance documentation is produced using XPP, in PDF format.
  • We enter a long-term agreement with the US Government Publishing Office (GPO) to replace their 30-year-old publishing system with XPP. Our application, designed for high-volume content environments, is ideal for an organization such as the GPO, which is responsible for the production and distribution of information and documents for all three branches of the Federal Government.
  • XPP 9.5 is released. This latest version includes the EDGAR HTML capabilities that make us a market leader in technology that allows structured content to be formatted and submitted to the SEC.

XPP has been through many updates since its inception, constantly evolving to meet new demands and leading the way in publishing solutions. Throughout the years, we have continued to support our customers through these changes. Register now to join us at our free XPP Online Summit on 1 and 2 December to learn more about how XPP can help you transform your publishing processes.
