By and For Localization Professionals: the Globally Speaking Podcast

We are pleased to announce the return of the Globally Speaking podcast. Globally Speaking is an industry-leading podcast for localization professionals hosted by localization professionals. We have made some exciting changes to our format and have booked some of the localization industry’s most innovative and exciting hosts and guests for upcoming episodes.

Globally Speaking: a brief history

Globally Speaking debuted in 2016 as the first podcast within the localization industry. The initial hosts, Michael Stevens and Renato Beninatto, two localization industry veterans, were inspired to create the podcast following the localization conference season. Their intention was to provide a platform for casual conversations around important industry topics like proving the ROI of localization, saving endangered languages and technological innovations.

The first episode of Globally Speaking was broadcast from Monterey, California, in front of a live audience. Monterey is known as the “Language Capital of the World” since this region hosts many military and educational language institutions, as well as private companies that provide cross-cultural training, localization and translation services. It was the perfect setting for a historic occasion.

Globally Speaking went on to air twice monthly for a total of 97 episodes and regularly featured some of the industry’s most recognizable figures. The 97th episode aired in early 2020, after which the producers took a short break to focus on relaunching the podcast with a new format.

To date, Globally Speaking has been downloaded by thousands of users worldwide.

Globally Speaking: the future

Globally Speaking provides an important platform for professionals to discuss a range of industry topics. We remain committed to our mission to educate, inform and challenge anyone who is engaged in global communications.

Going forward, a regular rotation of RWS Moravia hosts and special guests ensures that no two episodes are ever the same. Our podcast will continue to focus on industry-specific news in the areas of technology, global marketing, localization strategy, linguistics and all things language, while bringing a variety of different viewpoints from thought leaders within the translation and localization industry.

These days, we find ourselves living in a world that is drastically different from the one in which our podcast debuted back in 2016. Much like every other industry around the globe, localization services face unique challenges. The ways in which we communicate have and will continue to evolve. Consumer demands are shifting. Entirely new markets that did not exist even a few months ago have seemingly developed overnight.

Meeting these challenges requires that we stay abreast of the latest trends, developments and solutions. Globally Speaking is committed to helping our audience do just that.

Episode 98 – Translators without Borders

Be sure to tune in on July 2nd for our 98th episode in which we welcome Stella Paris, Head of Language Services at Translators without Borders. Translators without Borders is a non-profit organization focused on removing language barriers in global humanitarian matters.

Stella is a translation industry expert with over 15 years of experience. Her previous roles within the languages services industry include translator, vendor manager, project manager, key account manager, communication manager and marketing director. She is a strong believer in the power of global communication and an integral part of the organization’s latest initiative.

The COVID-19 pandemic has devastated individuals and societies around the world. The unprecedented global response and widespread media attention has led to what Translators without Borders has termed a “crisis of information.”

The organization has made it their mission to sort through misinformation to provide reliable COVID-19 data in languages that are often under-served. More specifically, Translators without Borders is focusing on:

  • Translating public-facing content into languages and formats that more people can understand;
  • Language data and mapping to create visual representations of languages and literacy levels to assist aid groups;
  • Social media monitoring to stop the spread of rumors and misinformation; and
  • Developing a multilingual glossary of key COVID-19 terminology.

Be sure to tune in to learn more about how you can get involved in this valuable cause.
